My Mitzvah Project was chosen as it is closely tied into my Torah portion, which teaches us to be caring and kind to each other. I wanted to share my caring heart and kindness with my community, especially during this challenging time during the Coronavirus epidemic.
I volunteered countless hours at "Caring for Friends", a food bank located in the Far Northeast that donates fully cooked meals to the 5 County Philadelphia area to home-bound seniors who are not able to cook meals or purchase food on their own. I have a love of baking, so I baked treats to be included in the prepared meals for donation. I really enjoyed my entire experience helping prep meals, packaging up the meals, putting together snack bags, collecting donations from local stores and family/friends. From home, I created bright and cheerful "caring" cards to be placed in each of the packaged meal boxes for delivery to brighten a "friend's" day, letting them know how special they are and that they are thought of.
It was really rewarding to hand deliver these meals to the homes of the elderly, disabled veterans and individuals that are financially stressed and see firsthand who these meals are going to. It was nice having a little chat with the recipients so they didn't feel as lonely, even though it was brief. It's nice to know that this organization is out there to reduce the loneliness they experience.
There are so many people I want to thank for helping me reach this special life cycle moment. Thank you to Cantor Zarkh for your assistance with my Torah and Haftorah portion, as well as other prayers. Thank you Rabbi Tornberg for helping me with my D'var Torah and Rabbi Leib for helping me and my family with the rehearsal. Thank you to all the Temple Beth Am teachers I had throughout the years for the great Hebrew education, to Sherrie, Jackie and Bonnie in the office for their guidance behind the scenes. Thank you to Dylan Band for converting piano sheet music for my alto sax.
Most of all, I want to thank my family and friends for their encouragement to practice and their loving support through the years.
Your presence here today in person or virtually from all over the country means so much to me. It is a huge honor and is greatly appreciated. ________________________________________________________________________
