This year is a very special year for me as it marks my 36th year of service to the Beth Am community. To mark this special time in my life, I would like to invite you to join me and the American Conference of Cantors in an amazing opportunity to travel to Poland and Prague! For nearly a thousand years, Central Europe was the Jewish heartland. This is a place of memory, of tragedy, and more recently, of Jewish Renewal. Join me as we explore together, sing together, and are inspired together by the stories that connect us all! For me, this is a dream come true to learn together through amazing travel experiences and through the universal language of music. I hope you will join me! We have until Chanukah to get an early bird registration!
If you are interested in this trip or have questions, please contact me at Ezarkh@oyrtbetham.org

10:00 AM Shabbat Morning Service in the Molish Sanctuary and on LIVESTREAM. BAT MITZVAH: KATELYN HELLER Daughter of Craig and Susan Heller
BAT MITZVAH - KATELYN HELLER For my mitzvah project, my family and I made blankets which we donated to the Montgomery County SPCA. This project was very special to me because I have been making blankets with my Mom-Mom for several years now and donating them to other animal rescues in the area. I chose this project because animals, especially dogs, are very important to me. My two dogs are part of my family and I cannot imagine my life without them. They were both strays that we rescued from the SPCA and I wanted to help in some small way to give back to, and continue the amazing work the SPCA and other animal rescues do. Every night I tuck my dogs in and make sure they are cozy and warm under their blankets. I wanted to make sure that the dogs at the SPCA had their own blankets so that they could hopefully feel cozy and warm too, and a little less scared.
I am beyond grateful to so many people who helped me reach this important day. Of course, I am grateful to my Mom and Dad and sister Madison for all of their love, support and guidance. I would also like to thank Rabbi Tornberg and Rabbi Leib for helping prepare me for today and for teaching me so much about my Jewish heritage. The biggest thanks, though, goes to Cantor Zarkh who had confidence in me even when I did not have confidence in myself. I hope I make everyone, especially the Cantor proud today.
Pirkei Avot with Rabbi Leib Sunday, November 7, 11:00 AM This week we’ll return to our discussion of Pirkei Avot 5:4. We’ll examine and discuss Rabbi Shmuley Yanklowitz’s text, which can be found on pp. 288-291 of Pirkei Avot; A Social Commentary, or at the link above.
Pirkei Avot will take a short hiatus after the November 7th class, to attend the live Sunday events at Beth Am, and to celebrate Thanksgiving. You can join us in the auditorium on November 14th at 9:00 a.m. for breakfast and the Harry and Evelyn Silver z”l Scholar in Residence program featuring Mark Oppenheimer. Mark will discuss his new book, Squirrel Hill: The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood. And you can join us again for breakfast on November 21st (9:30 a.m. in the auditorium) with a discussion about your heart health.
Both of these events are free, but do require advanced registration. You can register on ShulCloud, or by contacting Stacey Mardt in the Temple office, smardt@oyrtbetham.org. The book is now available in the Temple office for $24.50.
You can feed a less fortunate family of 4 a complete Thanksgiving dinner for just $20. Brotherhood’s annual Thanksgiving Family Dinner project is accepting contributions. See Tuesday’s email for details. CLICK HERE to join us on Zoom Meeting ID: 833 9277 0410 ______________________________________________
A Farewell Note from Bonnie Marks:
I would like to take this opportunity to say Goodbye and Thank You to my Beth Am family.
As some of you know, I will be retiring as of November 11. My time here at Beth Am has been blessed with fun, friendships and memories to cherish, not to mention the best co-workers anyone could ask for! I leave here knowing I have made life-time relationships, and for that I am grateful.
Some of you have asked the question…"What will you do?!" My plans are many, but at the forefront I want to spend more time with family and friends, travel, and activities too numerous to mention. Rest assured I will keep busy!
My husband Richard and I look forward to staying on as members of the synagogue and seeing you all in the future.

Join us November 14, 9:00 AM with Mark Oppenheimer ~ Free Event Through his words Mark paints a piercing portrait of the struggles and triumphs of one of America's renowned Jewish neighborhoods in the wake of unspeakable tragedy that highlights the hopes, fears, and tensions all Americans must confront on the road to healing.
Squirrel Hill : The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood. by Mark Oppenheimer
“Quite understandably, much of the early reporting on the Tree of Life crime focused on the alleged killer, who apparently had spent his recent life in the ugliest depths of the racist internet. He did not interest me. And the victims were eulogized at length. I was interested in everyone else… . I was curious to know how people dealt with the aftermath of mass violence…When the cameras and the police tape were gone, what stayed behind?”
Book Reviews: “…to mark the third anniversary of the tragedy, journalist Mark Oppenheimer, whose great-great-great-grandfather was one of the founding fathers of the Pittsburgh Jewish community back in 1846, offers Squirrel Hill: The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood, a detailed and well-written account of the massacre itself. This book focuses panoramically on the tragedy and those it touched…Years from now, when people want to know what happened in Pittsburgh, this is the book to which they will probably turn. Oppenheimer visited Pittsburgh thirty-two times and conducted some 250 interviews in a bid to get the story right. As a result, even those who followed the episode closely will learn fresh details concerning what happened.” —Jonathan D. Sarna, Jewish Review of Books, Fall 2021
“ So, when I received the galley for Oppenheimer’s book, I opened it with a bit of skepticism and a critical eye. I read it in one sitting. If you are wondering if an outsider could hope to capture the mood — maybe even the soul — of a neighborhood to which he does not belong following an unthinkably horrific event, I tender this take: Perhaps an outsider, as it turns out, is best suited to do so. Oppenheimer’s being far enough removed from Squirrel Hill allows him to observe meaningful details that could be too close in the line of vision for natives to see as clearly.” —Toby Tabachnick, Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle, September 24, 2021

Beth Am Book Club "The Submission" by Amy Waldman Tuesday November 16, 11:00 AM on Zoom Facilitated by Debbie Neibauer
"A remarkably bold and ambitious debut, The Submission is peopled with journalists, activists, mourners, and bureaucrats who struggle for advantage and fight for their ideals. In this deeply humane novel, the breadth of Amy Waldman's cast of characters is matched by her startling ability to conjure individual lives from their own points of view. A striking portrait of a city - and a country - fractured by old hatreds and new struggles, The Submission is a major novel by an important new talent. " CLICK HERE to join us on Zoom. BAT MITZVAH - DANI BROG
For my mitzvah project, I am honored to volunteer for Pooch Kaboose animal rescue service in Jenkintown, PA. Pooch Kaboose is an organization that secures, protects, and provides a forever home to dogs that have been abandoned, abused, or homeless. These puppies are transported from Puerto Rico to Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. On my part, I help feed, walk, play and socialize these dogs and prepare them to be adopted into their new home. I chose Pooch Kaboose because my dogs are very important to me and I admire all dogs very much. It makes me happy to see these dogs grow into their new families and have a long fulfilling life. My help and dedication continues to bring energy and happiness to these dogs. Since Covid, Pooch Kaboose has not been getting as many puppies as they usually do because flight availability has been limited. I am hoping that more puppies get the opportunity to be saved and given the gift of a happy home and I have decided to continue assisting for this program in the future after my Bat Mitzvah.
I am extremely grateful for all the people who have helped me reach this milestone in my life. First off, thank you to my Mom, Dad, Josh, and Lexi for supporting me through this process and helping me get ready for this monumental day. I am very appreciative to my parents for organizing and planning my Bat Mitzvah. I would also like to give a big thank you to Rabbi Tournberg, Cantar Zarkh, and Rabbi Leib for assisting and preparing me for my big day. Even though we had to reschedule my Bat Mitzvah due to covid, they still made sure I was well-prepared and ensured that this day would be as special as it would have been one year ago. I also appreciate the efforts of the religious school and the teachers and staff who provided a foundation for my Jewish education. Lastly, thank you so much to everyone who is here today to witness what I have accomplished and the many hours it took to get ready for this memorable day.
There will be NO Pirkei Avot this week. We will resume Sunday, October 31, at 11:00 AM. ______________________________________________

BAT MITZVAH - LAUREN SASS
“Given my deep love for the Arts, I had initially hoped to put on a charity performance, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have changed my mitzvah project and will now be collecting gently worn dance shoes and costumes to donate to dance schools across the country. Music, theater, and dance have been such an integral part of my life, that I hope this might help awaken a creative spirit in those who are otherwise less fortunate than me. Performance-based schools have taken such a huge hit during the pandemic and my hope is that this will help in some small way in the rebuilding of their programs.
I am grateful to so many people who have helped me reach this important milestone. First to my family, including my parents, brother, Aaron, and grandparents for always supporting and believing in me. I’d like to thank all of the clergy from Old York Road Temple Beth-Am for their guidance. Thank you to Rabbi Leib for conducting my run-through, to Rabbi Tornberg for assistance with my D’var Torah and Cantor Zarkh for helping me prepare for this special day. A heartfelt thank you also goes to my teacher, Mrs. Iris Spector, for all of her tutelage for my Bat Mitzvah. “ _______________________________________________

Beth Am Book Club "Have You Seen Luis Velez?" by Catherine Byan Hyde Tuesday October 19, 11:00 AM on Zoom Facilitated by Sandy Fryer
Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn't belong. Not with his mother's new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father's wife. Not at school, where he's an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he's tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who's introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?
Mildred Gutermann, a German Jew who narrowly escaped the Holocaust, has been alone since her caretaker disappeared. She turns to Raymond for help, and as he tries to track Luis down, a deep and unexpected friendship blossoms between the two.
