SAVE THE DATE! Friday, June 3, 6:00 PM Shabbat Under the Stars/Pride Shabbat/Czech Scroll Unveiling
We will be outside in the parking lot for this special Shabbat. We will supply the chairs; you can bring the cheer! Bring a bottle and toast our 75th anniversary and kick off the beginning of summer. Festivities begin at 6:00 p.m. in the lobby with a festive Pre-neg and an unveiling of our new Czech Scroll mural.
80 years ago, in 1942, the Jews of Louny, Tábor and Svêtlá nad Sázavou, Czechoslovakia, were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Three of the Czech Torah scrolls that originated in those towns, are currently held in the holy arks of Old York Road Temple-Beth Am in Abington, Pennsylvania. Now coinciding with our 75th anniversary, these three Torahs will be honored.
We have commissioned prominent artist Murrie Gayman to create a mural depicting the three towns, their Jewish citizens, and the Torahs they prayed with. The “Little Torah from Svêtlá” encased in plexiglass is flanked by representations of the Louny and Tábor Torahs, thus creating a lasting memorial dedicated to the Brill Family in memory the ten who perished in the Shoah.
Service begins at 7:00 p.m. with a special Oneg to follow. _________________________________________________

BAT MITZVAH - AMANDA MYERS
I’ve loved to be with and work with animals since I was little, especially cats. So, for my Bat Mitzvah project I am holding a fundraiser for Forgotten Cats. I chose Forgotten Cats, because in November of 2021 my family adopted two kittens named Princess and Sweetie from them.
Forgotten Cats even let us get them a few days earlier than planned. They were very nice people to talk to and we are glad that they gave us the chance to adopt Princess and Sweetie (who we later renamed Lily). Princess and Lily quickly became a part of our family and we have loved these two cats ever since.
For my Bat Mitzvah you can make a monetary donation in honor of my Bat Mitzvah, directly to Forgotten Cats through this link: https://forgottencats.org/services/donate/
Or, I will be collecting the following items: -Kitten food – wet & dry -Cat food – wet & dry -Cat Carriers -Cat Litter -Cat Treats
Items can be dropped off at my mom’s shop Olive Lucy 301 Leedom Street Jenkintown, PA 19046 Tuesday-Friday 10:00am-6:00pm; Saturday 10:00am-4:00pm.
I will be collecting now through the end of May. Thank you for helping me make a difference in these forgotten cats’ lives.
Thank you for supporting me in my Mitzvah Project.

10:00 AM Saturday Morning Service in the Molish Sanctuary and on Livestream BAR MITZVAH: ZACHARY BRUSILOVSKY Son of Dmitry and Dareen Brusilovsky
BAR MITZVAH - ZACHARY BRUSILOVSKY I decided to participate in a program for my Mitzvah project called WIN Buddies, which is a program at my middle school. WIN Buddies is something I participate in during Study Hall, where I volunteer spending my time with kids in Special Education. I really enjoy seeing how I can directly help make a difference in someone's life just by spending time with them or helping them overcome an obstacle in their path. I'm enjoying it so much that I plan on continuing to volunteer through the end of the school year.
I would like to thank everyone at Beth Am who has helped me throughout the years (since pre school!) up through helping me prepare for my Bar Mitzvah. I would also like to thank my grandmother, Bonnie Surrey, who has spent an enormous amount of time helping me perfect all of my Hebrew readings. Lastly, I'd like to thank my parents for always being there for me and pushing me towards my goals - even when I don't always want them to. Shabbat Shalom!

We continue to watch in horror and with disbelief the deliberate, systematic destruction of Ukraine and its bold, brave citizens.
In the aftermath of Russia’s hostile aggression especially after the bombing of Uman (tens of thousands of Bratzlaver Chassidim make an annual pilgrimage there to the tomb of the saintly Rabbi Nachman of Bratzlav) and in the vicinity of the Babyn Yar Memorial just outside of Kiev where nearly 34,000 Jews were massacred by the Nazis on September 29-30, 1941, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy made a rare address to world Jewry:
“Addressing all the Jews of the world: Don’t you see why this is happening? That is why it is very important that millions of Jews around the world do not remain silent right now. Nazism is born in silence. So, shout about the killings of civilians. Shout about the killings of Ukrainians.”
We forthrightly condemn - together with all other decent, honorable, law-abiding, peace-seeking people throughout the world - the utterly disgraceful and unforgivable invasion of Ukraine.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ukrainian people many of whom now constitute the largest refugee population since the Second World War and our prayers, similarly, are with their many compatriots who have made Philadelphia their home. We think of our bookkeeper Yelena Korotchuk whose family had to leave their home in suburban Kiev for a safe location south of the city. Yelena conveyed to us her family's appreciation for all our support.
We thank those of you who have already stopped by the Temple in recent days and contributed essential supplies to the local relief effort. They have been transported to the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center on Cedar Road in Jenkintown. Thanks to those of you who have volunteered your time there! And our heartfelt appreciation to those of you who have sent in donations through Federation, HIAS and JDC.
This Friday night is, coincidentally, our annual “HIAS Refugee Shabbat” and our guest speaker is Prof Iryna Ivankovych, President of the St. Sophia Religious Association of Ukrainian Catholics which has its headquarters in Elkins Park. In addition, a small ensemble of young Ukrainian men and women will present a few patriotic songs.
We sincerely hope that you will join with us at our 6:00pm Erev Shabbat service THIS Friday as we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, a country which was, after all, a home to so many of our own relatives.
The Talmud reminds us: “Whoever saves a single life saves an entire world.” Please play your part in helping those most in need at this time of great peril, dislocation and uncertainty.
Thank you very much!
Rabbi Robert Leib, Rabbi Shoshanah Tornberg, Cantor Elena Zarkh.

We See You: For Ukraine By: Hila Ratzabi for Ritualwell
Crowded in a subway station in Kharkiv
A student from another country clutches A dog to her chest Answering the reporter’s questions As men rush down the stairs Interrupting the interview.
Toddlers in snowsuits on blankets. Teenagers, heads down to their phones. Mothers’ eyes looking everywhere.
Svieta says she grabbed her documents and cash, She has a car, but nowhere to go. As she speaks, a boy in a blue winter hat And black-framed glasses, a few years older Than my oldest son, peeks out from behind her, Smiles shyly as he eyes the camera. A man stands behind him with his backpack Pressed against his chest, holding himself.
We see you. In our living rooms, At kitchen tables, as we pack lunches And perform our morning routines, We watch, helpless, holding your faces To our hearts as we tend to the small luxuries Of the mundane.
We fear from afar The brutal waste of war The extravagant arrogance of power. We rage at the rage of men Who refuse to see you, or rather, Choose to see through you and thereby Refuse to see themselves.
We see you. See the subway train Stalled at the station, the indefinite Pause of commute. We see you Huddled from the thunder Of bombs whose distance from you Is incalculable but near enough To tremble the heart.
We tremble with you. From across the world We hold you close Not with thoughts or prayers But the presence of the heart A commitment to witness A dedication to peace. We see you. We hold you. We will not leave your side.

Here's how you can support Afghan refugees.....
Since August 2021, HIAS PA has welcomed more than 100 Afghans to Philadelphia. The Afghan newcomers lost their country and their homes overnight and found themselves having to adjust to life in the U.S. after merely 20-30 days at an American military base. HIAS continues to need the enthusiastic support of local congregations to help them. Here is a list of requested items that are in low supply at this time:
Toothbrushes Kleenex Toilet Paper (2-ply) Shaving Cream Deodorant Shampoo (NO Conditioner)
In addition, the items on the Target Registryare all greatly needed.
There will be a bin in back of the synagogue to collect your donations. Collection will run through March 15.
Thank you for your support! Questions? Email Mindy Silver, mcamsilver@comcast.net _________________________________________________
